Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC)

The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Course (SRC) and Exam is for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio.
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.

The SRC is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.

We utilise ICOM M330GE training radios for our classroom course. These radios are based on the real thing but adapted for use in training. This allows a more realistic, hands on experience throughout your course.

This course is based in the classroom but is also available online through our training centre.

The Exam
Whichever way you choose to do the course, the exam will take place in the classroom.

SRC exams consist of a written theory exam and assessment in the practical use of marine VHF radios.
The exam fee is payable directly to the RYA.
Most candidates are required to complete an RYA SRC course prior to taking the exam, therefore the majority of exams take place at the end of the classroom course.
